University of Victoria: Orthopaedic Surgeons Collaborate with Biomechanics Lab Researchers

By Jolie Leung

On September 23, 2022, Dr. David Saliken was joined in the Victoria General Hospital operating room (OR) by Dr. Josh Giles, Assistant Professor, Mechanical Engineering, UVic along with Dr. Giles’s Post-Doctorate Fellow, Pavlos Silvestros. This was the first time that Dr. Giles and his associate were able to join Dr. Saliken in the OR since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. They anticipate that the UVic Engineers in Scrubs affiliation will lead to even more collaborative work with Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Giles also has an affiliate Assistant Professor appointment with UBC, Department of Orthopaedics. He presented his work to the Department of Orthopaedics Grand Rounds on March 16, 2022 and continues his collaborative research with Dr. Saliken on Shoulder Biomechanics & Arthroplasty in the Orthopaedic Technologies & Biomechanics Lab at UVic.

Drs. Saliken and Giles also recently published their first paper together in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery investigating the optimal reverse shoulder arthroplasty technique for treating patients with glenoid erosion. The paper can be accessed at https://doi.org/10.1053/j.sart.2022.08.003.

Any Orthopaedic Surgeons interested in discussing potential ideas for research in the UVic Biomechanics Lab are invited to contact Dr. Giles at mjwgiles@uvic.ca.
