UBC Orthopaedics recently co-hosted a very special combined Grand Rounds with the Departments of Surgery and Anesthesia titled, “The Evolution of Spine Trauma Care Shepherded by Marcel Dvorak,” celebrating the extraordinary legacy of Dr. Marcel Dvorak—an internationally respected spine surgeon, visionary leader, and beloved educator.

The event, held on June 11, 2025, featured reflections from esteemed Visiting Professor Dr. Alexander Vaccaro, and colleagues Dr. Nicolas Dea and Dr. Charles Fisher, who shared personal stories and professional insights into Dr. Dvorak’s profound influence on the field of spine trauma care. Their remarks highlighted not only his clinical and academic achievements but also the deep personal impact he had on those who worked alongside him.
With all 200 seats filled in the lecture hall and over 160 participants joining online, the event was a powerful testament to Dr. Dvorak’s enduring influence. We were especially honoured to be joined by the Dvorak family for this meaningful tribute.
Dr. Dvorak’s legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of spine care in Canada and around the world. As the head of the VGH Spine Program and a key figure in the UBC Department of Orthopaedics, he led the creation of the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre, a world-class facility that integrates patient care and research. His leadership extended nationally through the development of a multicenter research network and internationally through his work uniting global experts in spine trauma.
The Dvorak Lecture Series, born from his vision and passion for education, continues to inspire the next generation of spine surgeons and researchers. This event served not only as a tribute but also as a reaffirmation of the values Dr. Dvorak championed: excellence, innovation, and compassion in patient care.
