The Department of Orthopaedics was honoured to host Dr. Daniel Berry from the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, as the inaugural Dr. Clive Duncan Visiting Professor on November 20, 2024. The day consisted of Grand Rounds, complex case rounds and teaching sessions with residents, fellows and staff. Additionally, Dr. Berry delivered a presentation on academic orthopaedics.
Dr. Bas Masri and Dr. Don Garbuz welcomed everyone to the special event and delivered introductory remarks for Dr. Daniel Berry. Over 100 people joined the Grand Rounds session in person at the Eye Care Center Auditorium at VGH, or by Zoom, for Dr. Berry’s presentation titled “Revision total hip arthroplasty: The adventure from predictably bad to predictably good results—lessons for today’s unsolved problems.”
During the presentation, Dr. Berry emphasized the substantial impact that Dr. Clive Duncan’s clinical and research contributions have had on improving the care and outcomes for arthroplasty patients. Some notable examples include his pioneering work on the PROSTALAC technique for managing implant-related infections, advancements in the classification and treatment of periprosthetic fractures, innovative techniques and outcomes for revision hip replacements, among many other significant contributions.

Dr. Berry delivered a passionate and inspiring lecture, sharing valuable insights into the challenges faced in revision hip arthroplasty that have contributed to poor outcomes. He discussed solutions that have improved these results and explained how these strategies can be applied more broadly to orthopedic issues across various subspecialties. Additionally, he highlighted the most significant unresolved problems in joint replacement, such as prosthetic-related infection. He then challenged our audience and trainees to actively pursue solutions to these issues in the years ahead. Dr. Berry emphasized the importance of striving for excellence in clinical care while continually seeking ‘game-changing’ solutions that will truly advance our specialty.
After a discussion and refreshments, Dr. Bas Masri delivered an engaging presentation highlighting the history of UBC Orthopaedics and the significant impact Dr. Clive Duncan has had on advancing clinical care, excellence in teaching, and world-class research.
