We are pleased to share that Dr. David Wilson, Professor and Head, Division of Orthopaedics Research, and Dr. Parth Lodhia, Clinical Instructor at UBC Orthopaedics, have received a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (IMHA) Priority Announcement Grant.
The CIHR Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (CIHR-IMHA) provides research leadership in active living, mobility and the wide range of conditions related to bones, joints, muscles, connective tissue, skin, mouth, teeth and craniofacial region.
Drs. Wilson and Lodhia’s project, Biomechanical and imaging assessments of hip microinstability, aims to improve our understanding of hip microinstability, a condition where the hip joint becomes loose and unsteady, potentially leading to osteoarthritis. Using innovative MRI-based techniques based at the Centre for Aging SMART, the research team will measure hip movement in clinical postures, helping to identify early signs of cartilage degeneration and refine surgical approaches for better patient outcomes.
UBC’s Upright Open MRI—North America’s only scanner of its kind dedicated to research use—can capture images of patients while they are standing. This innovative approach provides a more accurate representation of knee function in real-world conditions. This advanced technology allows researchers to measure the meniscus’s effectiveness at distributing weight.
This work reflects a strong collaboration between the Department of Orthopaedics and the School of Biomedical Engineering, highlighting the interdisciplinary efforts in musculoskeletal research.
