In this spotlight, learn more about Dr. Nicolas Nicolaou, Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at Sheffield Children’s Hospital UK. As a previous CPOT faculty member in 2020, he is excited to return in 2023.

Can you tell me about your background a little? What is your specialty/subspecialty interest, and where do you work?

I am a Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at Sheffield Children’s Hospital in the UK, and have been a consultant for nearly 12 years. My clinical work is mainly on the child and adolescent knee, as well as metabolic bone disease.

How long have you been teaching at CPOT?

I attended the meeting in January 2020, just before COVID struck. Last year, due to travel restrictions international faculty was limited, so it is nice to be back in 2023. The organizing team do an excellent job of alternating faculty and bringing a diverse group of surgeons from around the globe.

What drew you to CPOT, and why do you enjoy teaching there?

CPOT is organized by our good friends at Vancouver, in particular Dr. Anthony (Tony) Cooper whom I know prioritizes learning and understands the importance of teaching in this format. The structure of the course is such that it has a high faculty to delegate ratio, well organized interactive sessions that optimizes learning opportunities, and a friendly ethos that promotes interaction.

What is your favourite part of the course?

Last time I really enjoyed the interactive case discussions – they’re a great way to learn.

Lastly, what do you think makes CPOT unique among other courses?

The faculty and location are fantastic – the organization and running of the course is of the highest standard. Unfortunately, I don’t ski and have no intentions of learning now or in the future, but I also look forward to the activity breaks and enjoying the scenery in Whistler in between the sessions. This time I’ll bring some waterproof boots!
