UBC Orthopaedics and University of Victoria Biomedical Engineering Program Collaborate to Inspire the Future of Orthopaedics

A recent event served as a shining example of how university partnerships can pave the way for transformative advancements in orthopaedic healthcare. The event, which brought together the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the growing Biomedical Engineering Program at the University of Victoria (UVic), captivated student attendees with its inspiring vision of collaboration in healthcare. Spearheaded by Dr. David Wilson, UBC Orthopaedics Professor and Associate Head of Research, and Dr. Joshua Giles, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Victoria, and Affiliate Assistant Professor at the UBC Department of Orthopaedics, the event focused on fostering connections, and igniting passion within the minds and hearts of the next generation of orthopaedic leaders.

The collaborative event provided a special opportunity for aspiring young researchers and clinicians from UVic to visit UBC labs, share presentations, and network with esteemed investigators. It also solidified the links between UVic and UBC, forging connections between students and faculty members from both institutions. These connections serve as the groundwork for future collaborations, paving the way for knowledge exchange, innovative research endeavors, and transformative breakthroughs in orthopaedic healthcare.

“By exposing students to cutting-edge research, clinical expertise, and the innovative environment at UBC, we hope to ignite their interest in the field of orthopaedics” says Dr. Wilson. “Events like this successfully strengthen collaboration between UVic and UBC, and build strong connections among students and faculty from both institutions.”

Through spearheading reciprocal university partnerships, UBC Orthopaedics advances its strategic plan by establishing an exemplary orthopaedic teaching and learning experience and pushing the boundaries of insightful discovery. As the Associate Head of Research with the Department, Dr. Wilson hopes to reinforce the value of reciprocal partnerships that empower diverse voices and inspire collaboration. “As we continue on our journey towards becoming a global center of excellence in orthopaedic healthcare, it is through such collaborative endeavors that we move closer to our ultimate goal: maximizing mobility and function for all individuals, locally and globally.”

We look forward to future collaborations as we continue to break boundaries and push the limits of what’s possible in orthopaedics!
