Congratulations to our 2024 Orthopaedic Research Day Award Winners

Each year, the UBC Department of Orthopaedics recognizes the incredible research by our trainees at our annual Orthopaedic Research Day event. This year’s event was held at BC Children’s Hospital on May 1, 2024 and was hosted by Dr. Fay Leung, UBC Orthopaedics Residency Program Director, and Dr. Michael Bond, UBC Orthopaedics Clinical Instructor.

This year’s review panel included two accomplished orthoapedic professionals:

  • Tim Daniels, MD, FRCSC. Professor, Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Toronto; Head, Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, St. Michael’s Hospital.
  • Graham King, MD, Msc, FRCSC. Professor and Director, Roth | McFarlane Hand & Upper Limb Centre (HULC), Schulich Medicine and Dentistry, Western University.

We are pleased to announce the 2024 UBC Orthopaedic Research Day award recipients:

Resident Research

  • 1st Place: Eryck Moskven – “Mitigating Medical Adverse Events Following Spinal Surgery: The Effectiveness of a Postoperative Quality Improvement (QI) Care Bundle” (supervised by Dr. John Street)
  • 2nd Place: Taylor Ricci – “Hip Dysplasia: Risk Factors and their Associated Diagnostic Severity” (supervised by Dr. Emily Schaeffer)

Clinical Fellow Research

  • Nikolaus Kögl (Clinical Fellow) – “The Natural Course of Mild Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy” (supervised by Dr. Nicolas Dea)

Graduate Student Research

  • Mehdi Nouri Zadeh (Graduate Student) – “Enhancing Upper Extremity Strength: Blood Flow Restriction Exercise for Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury” (supervised by Drs. Babak Shadgan & Kishore Mulpuri)

Poster Competition

  • Arashdeep Sidhu (Resident) – “Nickel Free‚ Hypoallergenic versus Standard Cobalt-Chrome Containing Total Knee Replacement: Is There a Difference in Synovial Metal Ions at Minimum 1-Year Follow-up?” (supervised by Dr. Michael Neufeld)
