Meet our 2023 Incoming Residents

We are pleased to welcome seven new residents to the UBC Department of Orthopaedics Residency Program in 2023: Mejbel Alajmi, Akash Chopra, Meg Evans, Nicola Horwood, Nicole Krysa, Taylor Ricci, and Katherine van Kampen.

We selected one resident for our sponsored residency program slot, and on CaRMS Match Day this March 22, 2023, the remaining five residency program slots were filled. Each of our new trainees brings outstanding accomplishments and a deep commitment to their residency education.

Join us in welcoming our new trainees to our residency program in July 2023!

Mejbel Alajmi

Medical School: Maastricht University – The Netherlands

“I am thrilled to join the UBC Orthopaedics family and get to know all its members. The residency program provides comprehensive exposure to all sub-specialties and will help me reach the level that I aspire. Plus, I heard that Vancouver is a great city to live in, can’t wait to discover it!”

Akash Chopra

Medical School: The University of British Columbia

“I am excited to join UBC Orthopaedics because of the great group of residents and staff in the program. I was drawn to their work-hard play-hard mentality and can’t wait to train with them in Vancouver. Looking forward to getting my hands on in the OR and continue exploring all that BC has to offer!”

Meg Evans

Medical School: The University of British Columbia

“I am stoked to be joining UBC orthopaedics! I am very grateful for the opportunity to train under world-renowned faculty and work among a lovely group of residents. I’m really looking forward to living in beautiful Vancouver, serving the people of my home province, and mountain biking on the North Shore!”

Nicola Horwood

Medical School: The University of British Columbia

“I am so excited to join the outstanding UBC orthopaedics team and remain close to home for my training! During electives, it was clear that I wanted to continue my training with the amazing staff and residents that I had the privilege of working with. I look forward to exploring Vancouver and the surrounding mountains!”

Nicole Krysa

Medical School: Queen’s University

“I am thrilled to be joining the UBC Orthopaedic Surgery team! It is a privilege to have the opportunity to train under the world-renowned faculty and residents at UBC – in an incredible city, no less – and I intend to make the most of the experience. I am looking forward to getting my hands dirty in the OR, familiarizing myself with downtown Vancouver, and working alongside a group of motivated, like-minded people.

Taylor Ricci

Medical School: The University of British Columbia

“I am incredibly excited to be joining the UBC Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program! It is an honour to be joining a prestigious team of faculty and residents who I know will be outstanding teachers and mentors. I look forward to developing as a surgeon here in BC and continuing to call Vancouver home!”

Kaid van Kampen

Medical School: McMaster University

“I’m very excited to be coming back to my home province for my residency training! I’m so excited to join UBC’s orthopedic family especially since I’ve been told walking into every OR is like walking into a classroom. I’m most looking forward to the variety of experiences I’ll have at UBC’s orthopedic program across their multiple community and academic sites.”
