Dr. Don Garbuz is Professor and Head of the Division of Lower Limb Reconstruction and Oncology at Vancouver General Hospital and the University of British Columbia. His practice focuses on adult hip and knee replacement. He has a special interest in complex revision surgery of the hip and knee. After graduating from McGill medical school, he completed his Orthopaedic residency at University of Toronto. He then completed two specialized fellowships in lower limb reconstruction at both the University of Toronto and the Inselspital in Berne, Switzerland. He has a Master’s Degree in Health Care and Epidemiology from the University of British Columbia and is the former president of the prestigious Canadian Arthroplasty Society. 

Since joining the faculty at UBC in 1996, Dr. Garbuz has been actively doing research on outcomes after hip and knee replacement. He is a very accomplished researcher and clinician and is highly regarded on the international stage. He has published over 130 articles on various topics in hip and knee replacement. Dr. Garbuz is frequently sought after and has given hundreds of lectures to local, national and international audiences on various topics related to hip and knee replacement.

Dr. Garbuz has received the Charnley Award and Stinchfield Award—the most prestigious research awards offered from the hip society—on four occasions. In 2015, he was awarded the highly esteemed presidential award of excellence from the Canadian Orthopaedic Association, which recognizes overall excellence in the advancement of orthopaedic research, education, healthcare organization, advocacy, and standards of care. It is awarded for commitment and contributions to the overall profession. Dr. Garbuz was awarded the Sir John Charnley Commemorative Gold Medal in 2015 after his Charnley Address to the British Orthopaedic Association.

Dr. Garbuz is a member of the Hip Society, Knee Society, and International Hip Society and is currently in line to be president of the prestigious Hip Society in 2024. He is only the second Canadian surgeon to be awarded this esteemed position.
