
Dr. Dena Shahriari among researchers awarded more than $500 million through 2022 Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) programs.
Dr. Shahriari, Assistant Professor at the UBC Department of Orthopaedics and UBC School of Biomedical Engineering, received an NSERC Individual Discovery Grant ($26,000 five-year term) along with a Discovery Launch Supplement of ($12,500 one-year term) for her research “Technological advances for the neuromodulation of the spinal cord.” Faculty of Medicine researchers were awarded more than $3.9 million through 2022 NSERC programs.
Individual Discovery Grants totaling $326 million were award to more than 1,725 researchers across the full range of science and engineering disciplines, from biology and chemistry to advanced materials engineering and astrophysics.
Discovery Launch Supplements amounting to $6.6 million were award to 529 early career researchers in the first year of their Discovery Grants to help them launch their careers.
Dr. Shahriari leads the BioAugmentative Interfaces Laboratory at the International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries (ICORD) in Vancouver, British Columbia. Her passion for improving the quality of life for those with paralysis is highlighted in her TEDx talk.
