Dr. Tim Kostamo, UBC Department of Orthopedics Clinical Assistant Professor and orthopedic surgeon, explains how Burnaby Hospital has become a centre of excellence for total joint replacements.
In a Global News Morning BC interview he shared how an increase in the number of hip and knee replacement surgeries at Burnaby Hospital was the catalyst for change. By learning innovative techniques, changing the way they did surgery, working with anesthesiologists, and improving pain control and physiotherapy they were able to reduce patients stays from 4 to 5 days to just 24 hours for most patients—with some patients going home the same day.
