A new technique developed by UBC Orthopaedics Assistant Professor, Dr. Babak Shadgan, can help clinicians monitor vital signs in patients recovering from respiratory diseases using a wearable near-infrared spectroscopy sensor.

Dr. Babak Shadgan is a Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR) Scholar, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of British Columbia (UBC), a faculty member at the UBC School of Biomedical Engineering, and a principal investigator at the International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries (ICORD), where he is directing the Clinical Biophotonics Laboratory.

UBC researchers lead $24 million project to treat spinal cord injury

A new multidisciplinary team—named Mend the Gap—is working on a novel approach that may someday help people with spinal cord injury. The Mend the Gap team recently received $24 million from Canada’s New Frontiers in Research Fund ​2020 Transformation stream to investigate using biomaterials—and soft gels in particular—to heal the injury.
