UBC Global Orthopaedics (UBC GO) is dedicated to advancing rural and Indigenous health through key initiatives.
UBC GO is collaborating with seed2STEM to teach future Indigenous STEM leaders about the practice of orthopaedic trauma. Seed2STEM is a program that engages Indigenous youth in science and medicine. Additionally, UBC GO is partnering with the Rural Coordination Centre of BC (RCCBC) to improve healthcare access for rural and Indigenous communities through the Real-Time Virtual Support (RTVS) Peer Pathways, promoting equity in rural and remote areas.
Faculty members are also encouraged to complete the San’yas Anti-Racism Indigenous Cultural Safety Training Program to foster cultural competency and create more inclusive healthcare environments. This program offers comprehensive training designed to promote anti-racism and cultural safety, specifically addressing Indigenous perspectives. UBC GO offers scholarships to members of the UBC Department of Orthopaedics that are interested in completing this program. If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity, please email us at global.orthopaedics@ubc.ca to express your interest.
Our Rural and Indigenous Health Initiatives
Real-Time Virtual Support (RTVS)

UBC Global Orthopaedics, in partnership with the Rural Coordination Centre of BC (RCCBC), is launching the RTVS Quick Reply Pathway to improve access to orthopaedic care for patients in rural communities across British Columbia. This initiative connects primary care providers with orthopaedic specialists through real-time video consultations, ensuring timely support for subacute and chronic orthopaedic conditions.
Get Involved
We are seeking orthopaedic specialists to join the call schedule. If you’re interested, please contact Taylor Crown at taylor.crown@alumni.ubc.ca, providing your Medical Office Assistant’s email.
This initiative will help bridge gaps in orthopaedic care, ensuring rural communities receive the timely and expert support they need.
Seed2STEM Summer Program

STEM fields are vital to advancing health care and driving Canada’s economy, yet Indigenous representation in these roles remains low.
Seed2STEM, a summer program for Indigenous high school students in Metro Vancouver and Kelowna, seeks to boost participation by offering paid placements and support in a fun, barrier-free environment.

San’yas Training Program

San’yas, meaning “way of knowing” in Kwak’wala, is a word from the language of the Kwakwaka’wakw Peoples, whose traditional and unceded territories span northern Vancouver Island and surrounding regions. UBC faculty members are encouraged to complete the San’yas Anti-Racism Indigenous Cultural Safety Training Program to enhance cultural competency and support inclusive healthcare. This program provides anti-racism training with a focus on Indigenous perspectives.
