UBC Pediatric Orthopedic Researchers Recognized as Global Experts in Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) and Congenital Hip Dislocation

Dr. Emily Schaeffer

UBC Department of Orthopaedics is proud to share that two members of our department have been recognized as global experts in developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) and congenital hip dislocation based on their contribution to research over the past ten years.

Dr. Emily Schaeffer, one of the two featured, is a research associate with UBC Department of Orthopaedics and research director for orthopedic surgery at BC Children’s Hospital.

HIPpy Research Team

Dr. Schaeffer is part of a greater team of researchers, managers, allied health personnel, epidemiologists, post-doctoral research fellows, graduate students, research coordinators, cooperative education students and volunteers that make up the HIPpy Research Team at BC Children’s Hospital. Their mission is to diagnose and detect hip dysplasia and hip dislocation in new born babies within their first three months, significantly reducing the likelihood of complications and surgeries later in life.

International Hip Dysplasia Registry

Taking their research from local to global, the HIPpy Research Team formed the International Hip Dysplasia Registry (IHDR) in 2016. The registry—now with 28 participating centres from eight countries across five continents—is a collaboration of surgeons, researchers, and medical professionals dedicated to sharing data and research with teams across the globe with the goal of optimizing patient care and improving the lives of children with hip dysplasia.

Congratulations to the HIPpy Research Team!
