We are delighted to announce that Dr. Carrie Kollias has joined the UBC Department of Orthopaedics as Co-Director, Mentorship and Wellness and Clinical Associate Professor beginning January 1, 2025. She joins Dr. Alastair Younger, Co-Director, Mentorship & Wellness and Dr. Tym Frank, Assistant Director, Mentorship & Wellness.
Dr. Kollias completed her residency at the University of Calgary and pursued fellowships in limb reconstruction and pediatric orthopaedics at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.
She has extensive experience in both regional and tertiary orthopaedic settings. She spent seven years in Southern Alberta, focusing on pediatric orthopedics, adult trauma, and limb deformity reconstruction. She was enticed back to Melbourne in 2018 for a tertiary pediatrics role and served as Deputy Director of Orthopaedics at Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne from 2021 to 2024.
Dr. Kollias is passionate about fostering a sense of community among regional surgeons and their tertiary partners, despite the geographic distances. She believes that by connecting and collaborating, they can learn a great deal from each other and achieve remarkable advancements together.

Dr. Carrie Kollias, Co-Director, Mentorship & Wellness
“I see huge potential for UBC Orthopaedics to become an innovative leader in surgeon wellbeing. Globally, departmental wellbeing strategies have historically over-emphasized surgeon personal resilience and have done little to invest in the culture of wellness (appreciation, peer support, collegiality, meaning in work) and efficiency of practice. All three components are required for a healthy and fulfilled work force and need to be pursued simultaneously for meaningful gains to occur. I am excited to work with Dr. Younger, Dr. Frank, and UBC Ortho members and leaders to grow authentic community through innovative modalities, crossing geographic and generational distances. I look forward to tackling and discussing in open forums the most challenging issues we are facing as a profession. I aim to leverage wellbeing concerns to advance health interests and efficiency of practice for UBC Department of Orthopaedics members.”
In 2024, she earned an MBA from Imperial College London. She has also received a Specialist Certificate in Clinical Leadership from the University of Melbourne Business School and completed the Physician Wellbeing Directors Course at Stanford University.
Dr. Kollias has published national studies on the wellbeing of orthopaedic surgeons and trainees in both Canada and Australia. She received the Tass Paxinos Award for Excellence in Orthopaedic Teaching from the Australian Orthopaedic Association. Additionally, she is the author of the award-winning children’s book, Maria’s Marvelous Bones.
Outside of work, although she modestly describes herself as a ‘very average hockey player,’ she has enthusiastically joined two Vancouver teams and occasionally brings her kids along to watch!
Please join us in giving Dr. Carrie Kollias a warm welcome.
