Meet Kaasvi Bhatia, our Communications Associate here in the UBC Department of Orthopaedics! Kaasvi is in her fourth year at UBC, studying Media Studies with a minor in Informatics. She’s passionate about storytelling, creativity, and finding new ways to share the incredible work happening in the department. When she’s not writing or creating content, you’ll probably find her on a tennis court, at a café with her diary, or watching her favorite Bollywood movies.

Can you share a little bit about your educational background and journey, and how you got to where you are today?

I’m a fourth-year student at the University of British Columbia, where I’m completing a Bachelor of Media Studies with a minor in Informatics—a combination that lets me explore both creative storytelling and data-driven communication. Throughout my studies, I’ve developed a strong interest in how storytelling and digital communication can make a real difference—especially in the field of health. Before joining the Department of Orthopaedics, I completed internships in digital marketing and journalism, where I gained experience in content creation, writing, and social media strategy.

Can you summarize what you do in the Department?

As the Communications Associate, I help share the Department’s stories and achievements through various platforms. I support content creation for our website, newsletters, and social media, assist in drafting communication materials, and collaborate with the team to highlight ongoing research, events, and global outreach projects. My goal is to make the Department’s work more visible and engaging for both the UBC community and broader audiences.

What is your favorite thing about working in the Department?

My favorite thing about working in the Department is the people. I’m surrounded by an incredible team that’s always supportive and encourages me to learn and grow. I’ve gained so much from their experience and insights, and every project teaches me something new. I also love getting to attend events like Ortho Update, UGME sessions, and the North American Travelling Fellows presentations—it’s inspiring to have a front-row seat to the groundbreaking work happening in orthopaedics.

What is one interesting fact about you that people may not know?

An interesting fact about me is that I travel everywhere with a small diary. I write down everything—small tasks, reminders, and random thoughts throughout the day. It helps me stay organized and brings a sense of calm when things get busy.

I also recently started junk journaling, where I collect just about everything—receipts, ticket stubs, wrapping paper, even bits of tissue or notes. It’s a fun and creative way to hold on to memories from everyday moments. I love flipping through the pages later and seeing how small pieces of my day come together to tell a story.

What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?

I’ve always been passionate about sports! I’ve been playing tennis since I was eight and have competed in several tournaments over the years. I also love playing badminton, table tennis, pool, and volleyball whenever I get the chance. Recently, I’ve gotten into running and just completed my first half marathon, which was an amazing experience.

Outside of sports, I love spending time with my family and friends and watching Bollywood movies—I’m a huge Bollywood geek and can probably quote half the lines from my favorite films!
