Jacki Lung is an HR Assistant with the UBC Department of Orthopaedics. Among other things, you’ll find Jacki supporting and coordinating clinical faculty appointments, reappointments, and promotions for new and existing clinical faculty members.

How long have you worked in the department/UBC?

I’ve been with the Department of Orthopaedics since April 2020. Because I started remotely, I’ve only met most of my coworkers once or twice in real life!

Can you summarize what you do in the department?

As an HR Assistant, my job is to support the Department of Orthopaedics with the full lifecycle of staff, students, clinical faculty, and clinical fellow. I work closely with managers and provide day-to-day HR transactional support and guidance for the department. A large part of my job also involves supporting and coordinating clinical faculty appointments, reappointments, and promotions for new and existing clinical faculty members.

What is your favorite thing about working in the department?

One of my favourite things about the department is the learning opportunities that this job provides from a career and professional development standpoint. Truly, no two days are the same. I am grateful for the wealth of knowledge the department holds and its willingness to share. It is also exciting to see the department and its members’ contributions and how it is making a positive impact in the community.

What is one interesting fact about you that people may not know?

I am not a fan of ketchup and haven’t used it since I tried it as a kid. The texture of condiments freaks me out. Growing up, I never ate beef burgers because I associated ketchup with burgers. It wasn’t until later in life I realized I could ask for “no condiments” when ordering.

What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?

When I am not working, you can find me at the gym/fitness classes or biking/hiking around the lower mainland in the summer. I love staying active with my friends. I am an animal lover, so you may find me greeting and petting your dog while on a walk (with permission, of course).
