International Women’s Day 2021

Women in the UBC Department of Orthopaedics are making significant contributions in improving musculoskeletal health and patient care while inspiring and training the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons.

In recognition of International Women’s Day, the Department is highlighting a few of our many female faculty members and trainees.

Lise Leveille

UBC Orthopaedics Clinical Assistant Professor – Division of Pediatric Orthopaedics

What inspired you to pursue a career in orthopaedics?
I really like to think of myself as an orthopedic surgeon that happens to be female. Not a female in Orthopaedics. I was fortunate to train in a program that fostered my strengths as a surgeon and physician and enabled me to succeed in my chosen career path. Starting a family and beginning my practice over the last 5 years has had its challenges. I have been very fortunate to be surrounded by male and female mentors that have helped me establish my career without neglecting my family. All surgeons should be empowered to achieve this – both male and female.

What advice would you give to women wanting to pursue a career in the field of orthopaedics?
I encourage all the young women I work with who find their passion in Orthopaedics to pursue a career in this specialty. I think there are some very real challenges, which I am very open to discussing with my female trainees. Regardless of the challenges, I feel very fortunate to love what I do and I think every young woman should strive to find that.
