About:

This Hand & Upper Extremity Fellowship is offered as part of the Division of Distal Extremities. The fellowship is based primarily at St. Paul’s Hospital in downtown Vancouver with an option to participate in surgery and clinic at BC Children’s Hospital. The Upper Extremity Unit comprises of 3 orthopaedic surgeons. It offers a unique opportunity for a high volume clinical exposure to all aspects of hand & upper extremity surgery. Cases provide experience in trauma, post-traumatic reconstruction and elective work.

This is a preceptor based learning experience. Emphasis will be placed on reconstructive surgery, with wide clinical exposure and operative experience in areas of arthroscopy, joint reconstruction, trauma and post-traumatic reconstruction. There will be a strong focus and exposure to shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand arthroplasty and the management of simple and complex arthritic conditions and deformity of the upper limb. Patient assessment and management in the outpatient department clinics allows the fellow to participate in treatment plan, surgical procedures and continuing care after surgery. Graded responsibility allows for fellows to manage trauma and elective outpatient clinics with significant autonomy. Surgical experience includes outpatient and main operating theatre swing rooms providing high surgical volumes.

Requirements:

Academic responsibilities include participation in weekly trauma and upper extremity rounds, resident seminar series, and teaching for both resident and undergraduate students. Each fellow will be involved in at least 2 research units with the expectation of publication and presentation at major scientific meetings.
