At UBC Orthopaedics, we are proud to announce a significant step in strengthening our research excellence with the appointment of Dr. Emily Schaeffer as our Director, Clinical Research, effective April 1, 2026.
Dr. Emily Schaeffer is a dedicated advocate for globally impactful research with a deep-rooted passion for improving musculoskeletal health. A graduate of the University of British Columbia who later earned her PhD in Experimental and Molecular Medicine from Dartmouth College, Dr. Schaeffer’s journey was fueled by an early fascination with mechanistic science and a personal drive to find solutions for complex medical problems.
Her trajectory into clinical research leadership was catalyzed by her extensive work at BC Children’s Hospital, where she has served as Research Director for Pediatric Orthopaedics. Since joining the department in 2014, her leadership in developing the Hippy Global Registry Program and the SCFE Longitudinal International Prospective (SLIP) Registry has laid the groundwork for her role in shaping the department’s broader clinical research initiatives.
Reflecting on the department’s mission, Dr. Schaeffer emphasizes the power of a “local-to-global” approach. She envisions a future where robust infrastructure and dedicated mentorship empower faculty across all divisions to pursue projects with critical clinical impact, a vision that aligns seamlessly with the Department of Orthopaedics’ commitment to excellence on a global scale.
