About UBC GO
UBC Global Orthopaedics (UBC GO) is an initiative within the Department of Orthopaedics dedicated to enhancing orthopaedic care and outcomes in resource-challenged communities worldwide. Our pledge extends to addressing health inequities and the determinants of Indigenous Peoples’ health, supporting their self-determination, and fostering improved health outcomes for Indigenous Peoples.
Our UBC Orthopaedics faculty members have rich skills in teaching and treating musculoskeletal system (MSK) pathology. Many have the desire to assist in reducing the burden of musculoskeletal disability within and beyond BC through building capacity, providing clinical care, and pursuing research in areas of need. Embracing UBC’s view that universities are universal actors, the Department of Orthopaedics seeks to enhance the impact of our clinical and scholarly activities to help build a more just, sustainable, resilient, and thriving world.

Hip Hope Network
The Hip Hope Network is a collaborative group of hip health professionals dedicated to advancing research and knowledge-sharing for pediatric hip conditions globally. They aim to provide protocols for screening, diagnosing, and treating children with various hip conditions, welcoming clinicians, surgeons, researchers, nurses, and advocates to join their efforts.

Spinal Cord Injury Nepal
Spinal Cord Injury Nepal (SpiNepal) is a group of active or retired healthcare specialists from Vancouver, Canada, who have expertise in caring for individuals with spinal cord injuries, are collaborating with colleagues in Nepal to share their knowledge and skills. Their objective is to establish international standards of spinal care at the Spinal Injury Rehabilitation Centre (SIRC) in Nepal, create a sustainable care system, and develop SIRC as a central hub for spinal care in Nepal, with goals including training Nepalese specialists and enhancing SIRC’s capacity.

Uganda Sustainable Clubfoot Project
The Uganda Sustainable Clubfoot Care Project (USCCP) is a collaborative initiative involving Makerere University, the University of British Columbia, and the Ugandan Ministry of Health. Its purpose is to provide sustainable, effective, and safe treatment for congenital clubfoot deformity in Uganda, aiming to prevent deformity-related challenges by building local capacity for early detection and management.

Uganda Sustainable Trauma Orthopaedic Program
In 2007, orthopaedic surgeons Drs. Peter O’Brien, Piotr Blachut, and Trevor Stone from UBC Department of Orthopaedics initiated an investigation into traumatic injuries in Uganda. This led to the establishment of the Uganda Sustainable Trauma Orthopaedic Program (USTOP) in partnership with Makerere University, aiming to address the impact of traumatic injuries by improving education and care for those affected at Mulago Hospital, a vital orthopaedic training center in East Africa.
